Yard Dawgz

It is unknown whether this mysterious QB moonlights as a race car driver.

After only one season of success for the Thunder, it has been decided that Oklahoma City can not only support one, but, in fact, TWO major league teams!

What will this new major league team be, you ask?

The Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz.

That's right, the formerly af2 team is now joining the newly reformed AFL!

What does this mean?

Well, for right now, not much. The Yard Dawgz never attracted huge crowds, and the AFL is trying to make a comeback in the face of an economic recession and a newly created UFL. They'll have a tough task ahead of them. Not to mention the fact that all of the formerly B-List stars are probably no longer under contract, forcing the AFL to get an entirely new crop of talent. There is some light at the end of the tunnel, as there is no Summer League running at this point, but the AFL is still on shaky ground at best.

Looking at the history of major league teams in Oklahoma, it looks feesable that the Yard Dawgz could get to "major league" status. According to this article, the Oklahoma Wranglers, a Arena Football team that was here in the early 2000s, managed over 10,000 attendees at some games. Nevertheless, I would imagine that attendance on typical nights hovered around 5,000-8,000. The Oklahoma Outlaws, a USFL team which played in Tulsa in 1984, had 15,937 for it's home opener, assumedly the most for that season, as the team went 6-12. When the Yard Dawgz themselves played here two years ago, the average attendance was 7,200. Given all of this information, I think it would be reasonable to assume that if the AFL could get some significant talent and a modest Television contract, the Yard Dawgz could average around 10,000 fans in the AFL, give or take. We have one of the most dedicated af2 fan bases, so there's a big chance this could be a premiere franchise.

But, in the end, I'd expect the AFL to take a year to two to get to its former status, if it ever gets there. And the bottom line is that no matter what happens, the Yard Dawgz are still just going to be a team playing weird football in the Cox Convention Center.
